Sivakumar to present at ProBioTech2008

James Evanoff was promoted to the position of chief financial officer for FONA International, and Andrea Weinecke was promoted to analytical supervisor. The company's new hires include Melissa Battles as a senior applications technologist in the Grain Business Unit, William Churchwell as a health and safety compliance officer, Theresa Guess as a quality-assurance supervisor, and Angel Ray Pimienta as plant manager.

Upgraded soft-gel encapsulators
Robinson Pharma has upgraded its soft-gel encapsulation capacity with the addition of several new Kamata encapsulators. The machine is recognized as the finest encapsulator available and will improve output by more than 200 per cent per production line. Robinson Pharma currently operates 22 production lines for soft-gel encapsulation.?

GRAS status for Salt Lake products
Mineral Resources International (MRI) has received valued GRAS designation for its full range of products. MRI is the only company to achieve GRAS status for naturally harvested mineral products originating from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This designation applies to a broad range of both finished products and mineral ingredients manufactured and sold by the company.

IMG to assist Toyo Bio-Pharma
The Integrated Marketing Group (IMG) has announced a working relationship with Toyo Bio-Pharma, Japan's leading manufacturer of botanical and natural ingredients. IMG will work with Toyo Bio-Pharma's US office to create several types of marketing materials, including trade advertisements and corporate collateral materials. IMG will also co-ordinate Toyo Bio-Pharma's media buys and trade-show activity, as well as manage a long-term public-relations campaign.

Sabinsa opens a new 17,000-sq-ft manufacturing and distribution facility in Payson, Utah.Contract plant operational
Sabinsa's Payson, Utah, manufacturing and distribution facility is now fully operational. The 17,000-square-foot centre develops capsules, tablets, bulk custom pre-mixes, drum-to-hopper blends, stick packs and powdered drinks.

Advances for Cyanotech
New direct-sales company OceanGrown International is launching several products with Cyanotech's BioAstin as a key component. The initial product line, OAVE (oh-ave), is a skincare line. Cyanotech has also recently formed a relationship with Valensa International, a leader in supercritical CO2 extraction. Valensa's facility is capable of extracting large volumes of Haematococcus microalgae without the use of solvents to produce a high-quality Astaxanthin oleoresin. The contract guarantees Valensa a supply of Cyanotech's Haematococcus to produce Valensa's trademarked astaxanthin product Zanthin.

New focus on Africa
Fortitech is dramatically increasing its focus on the emerging African market, appointing AB Mauri, a new operating division of Associated British Foods, as distributor to a number of African countries.

Marketing pact for zinc carnosine
B&D Nutritional Ingredients and XSTO Solutions have announced exclusive marketing rights for Hamari Chemical's zinc-carnosine (crystalline amino-mineral complex of L-carnosine and zinc), a dietary-supplement ingredient targeting stomach health. Zinc carnosine has been a successful product in Japan since 1994 for stomach disorders such as heartburn, indigestion, stomach irritation and ulcers, as well as inhibiting Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria associated with stomach ulcers. It is now marketed in the US.

Asia office director
International food, health and nutrition policy consultancy EAS has appointed Dr Daniel Tsi as regional director of its Singapore-based EAS Asia office. He most recently worked at multinational food and health-supplements company Cerebos Pacific Ltd, where he was senior regional manager of scientific research.

Soft-gel upgrade
Robinson Pharma has upgraded its soft-gel inspection capability to a fully automated process using a Symetix optical inspection system. The company recently completed a plant expansion and cGMP certification by Shuster Labs.

Texturising office opens in Dubai
Cargill Texturizing Solutions is adding a new office for its texturising?business in the Gulf region. Denis Palacioglu, sales manager for Turkey, the Middle East and Africa, will manage the new office, located in Dubai. Pact for patented probiotic
PL Thomas will represent Ganeden Biotech's GanedenBC30, Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, to the food and beverage industries. A patented probiotic with self-affirmed GRAS status, the ingredient maintains viable cells after surviving harsh manufacturing processes. It has a long shelf life and low use level, and does not need to be refrigerated. Kosher-certified GanedenBC30 can be baked, boiled, frozen and squeezed into virtually any food and beverage application.

New sales manager
Century Foods International has hired Pete Hahn to serve as sales manager of contract manufacturing. Hahn brings 13 years of experience working with a wide variety of food manufacturing plants, as well as direct experience with chemical and microbiological control.

Actifs Innovants Division sells
Naturex purchased Berkem's Actifs Innovants Division for $13.9 million. The division generated a turnover of $5.6 million in 2007. The business consists of clinically tested and trademarked plant extracts, and includes such brands as Svetol, a green-coffee extract for weight loss.

Litesse for yoghurts
Danisco's Litesse can now be used to create reduced-calorie, prebiotic, fibre-enriched, reduced-sugar yoghurt products and yoghurt beverages, when used as a stabiliser in accordance with the yoghurt standards of identity. Litesse can be added to yoghurt before or after fermentation, or as part of the fruit preparation of fruit yoghurt where it can replace the bulk of sugar. Available in both liquid and powder forms, it remains stable during the processing and shelf life of dairy products.

MenaQ7 earns GRAS status
MenaQ7 is an extract of fermented soy food called natto, providing a natural source of vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7. NattoPharma of Norway and PL Thomas have received independent GRAS designation for MenaQ7 for use as an ingredient in food products. It has been determined to be safe as a human food ingredient by an independent panel of recognized experts.
