Probiotics research honoured
First prize in the Rosell Probiotic Challenge, for pioneering research in the use of probiotics, was awarded to Jean-Fran?ois Daudelin. Second prize went to Stéphanie-Anne Girard. Daudelin's project aimed at evaluating the potential and mode of action of probiotics bacteria and yeast in the prevention of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) infection in piglets. Piglet infection post-weaning is an important financial burden in pig farming. Girard looked at the effects of a probiotic preparation (Probio'Stick, Institut Rosell-Lallemand) in an animal model of myocardial infarction, a field of study never before investigated with probiotics. The probiotic formulation was shown to diminish apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in the limbic system.
