Edmonton, December 1, 2006 – Dr. Jacqueline Shan, President, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of CV Technologies Inc. – the makers of COLD-fX® – received a unique honour this week. She has become the first Chinese –Canadian to be inducted into the Canadian Healthcare Marketing Hall of Fame.
Dr. Shan’s historic induction marks a number of firsts for this national award. In addition to being the first Chinese-Canadian recipient, it is the first time anyone from a Western Canadian business has received this recognition. She is also the first scientific officer and the first person from the natural products or nutraceutical category of the pharmaceutical industry to be inducted.
“I am so very honoured with this award,” said Dr. Shan. “I am very proud to be in the company of so many individuals who have contributed so much to this industry.”
In 2003, Dr. Shan, co-founder of the company and co-discoverer of COLD-fX, was appointed CEO of CV Technologies in addition to her responsibilities as President and Chief Scientific Officer. At that time, the company had sales of $1.5 million, a market cap of around $3 million and a balance sheet in the red. Dr. Shan was given a mandate to turn the company around. In just two short years, under her leadership, the company posted sales of nearly $32 million in 2005, profits of $10 million, saw soaring stock prices and commanded a market cap over $400 million. COLD-fX is now the # 1 selling cold and flu product in Canada and CV Technologies was named 2005’s Marketer of the Year by leading industry publication Marketing magazine.
“Doctors, nurses and other health care professionals tell me there is an urgent need to inform and educate the public about the consequences of flu, as well as effective methods of prevention,” added Dr. Shan. “By washing our hands regularly, maintaining a good diet and by strengthening our immune system we can better protect ourselves. That’s where COLD-fX comes in. It is clinically proven to strengthen the immune system and help fight off cold and flu viruses. People trust it. That’s why in the last three years is has quickly become Canada’s number one selling cold and flu remedy.”
These are among Dr. Shan’s recent accomplishments:
• Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People for 2006, Alberta Venture magazine
• Nominee for Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year for 2006
• One of Canada’s Most Powerful Women – Top 100 for 2005
• One of Profit magazine’s W100 (top Canadian female entrepreneurs) for 2006 and 2005
• Winner of the Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Health Sciences
• finalist for the RBC’s 2005 Canadian Female Entrepreneur of the Year award
“Dr. Jackie Shan is a prime example of a visionary business leader blending great science with marketing savvy to create outstanding success in the Canadian healthcare marketplace,” said Rudy Fernandes, president of Global Health Strategy Inc., who introduced Dr. Shan prior to her induction.
The Canadian Healthcare Marketing Hall of Fame is sponsored by The Chronicle of Healthcare Marketing and its sister publication, Chronicle Monday. The awards were established in 2001 to honour healthcare marketers who have made outstanding contributions to the healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotech and devices industries.
Previous inductees include presidents or former presidents of three of Canada’s largest pharmaceutical companies: Michael Cloutier and Gerry McDole of AstraZeneca Canada, Jean-Michel Halfon of Pfizer Canada and Philip Blake of Bayer Inc. (who was also inducted this year).
“It is pretty obvious that Jacqueline Shan is an exceptional inductee,” said Mitchell Shannon, publisher of The Chronicle of Healthcare Marketing, the founder and organizer of the Hall of Fame awards. “Dr. Shan’s selection represents many firsts.
“She has a unique background. She came from the lab and has built CV Technologies following the founders’ visions. Dr. Shan certainly has impressed a lot of people in our industry. Her ability to promote her product, COLD-fX, and build her company comes through very clearly. She is an ideal choice.”
