Companies that excel
Business Ethics magazine rated the 100 best corporate citizens for 2006, and a number of naturals names showed up. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters took the No. 1 slot; Wild Oats Markets ranked 28; Gaiam was 32; Whole Foods Market, 47; and United Naturals Foods Inc., 50. Kellogg Co., owner of such brands as Kashi and Morningstar Farms, was 55 on the list, and Nature's Sunshine products came in at 64. The companies were rated on their ability to provide good jobs for employees, environmental sustainability, healthy community relations and great products for customers.
Farm harvests energy
Lundberg Family Farms is using a state-of-the-art solar array to generate electricity on its Richvale, Calif., farm. The solar panels cover about half an acre of land and will produce more than 350,000 kilowatt hours per year. During the spring and summer, when Lundberg's energy needs are low, the array will contribute solar power to California's energy grid. In the fall when rice is being harvested, the company needs more energy to power its rice driers. The store of credits will provide the energy to dry rice in 18 concrete silos, each capable of holding 2 million pounds of rice. The company built the array as part of Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s Self Generation Incentive program, which provides grant funding and education to businesses that are interested in renewable energy projects.
Spreading organic holiday cheer
Employees of New Hope Natural Media, which publishes this magazine, are banding together to feed 40 families this year during the holidays. The goal is to feed the families organic and natural food for one month, and also volunteer for the Emergency Family Assistance Association of Boulder and Broomfield counties, which will distribute the food to low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. Donations of dry goods, shelf-stable soymilk, baby food and more are being sought. For more information on donation needs and shipping information, contact James Keil at 303.998.9297 or [email protected].
