Telling Organic Story Key to New Center
The Center for Organic Education and Promotion has launched a million-dollar fund-raising effort and hired as its interim executive director Jesse Singerman, former CEO of Blooming Prairie Cooperative Warehouse.
Center President Theresa Marquez of Organic Valley announced that a scientific advisory board of experts from the United States and abroad is being recruited to play a key role in the center's mission to "prove and communicate the organic benefit." The center will serve as a clearinghouse for information about organic agriculture and products' environmental, health and taste benefits.
New Officer Slate Announced by OTA
Phil Margolis of Neshaminy Valley Natural Foods took the reins as president of the Organic Trade Association at OTA's annual meeting in Austin, Texas. Other officers are Jesse Singerman, consultant, vice president representing the United States; Debra Boyle of Pro Organics, vice president representing Canada; Chuck Marcy of Horizon Organic, treasurer; Dave DeCou of One Step Forward Farm, secretary; and Nancy Hirshberg of Stonyfield Farm, at-large member on OTA's executive committee.
Brian Leahy of California Certified Organic Farmers was elected to his first term on the OTA board. Lynn Clarkson of Clarkson Grain Co. was chosen to fill an appointed seat. Continuing board members are Luis Acuña of CF Fresh; Andy Grant of Grant Family Farms; Theresa Marquez of Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative; Marty Mesh of Florida Certified Organic Growers & Consumers; LaRhea Pepper of Organic Essentials; John Stalker of Weetabix Canada; and Margaret Wittenberg of Whole Foods Market.
NNFA Opens D.C. Office
The National Nutritional Foods Association has opened a Washington, D.C., office to boost its advocacy programs for the natural products industry. David R. Seckman, executive director and CEO of the organization, was the first to relocate to the new office at 1220 19th St. NW, Ste. 400, in downtown Washington. NNFA will maintain its Newport Beach, Calif., office as well.
