Dr. Yawei Ni, a former research scientist and team leader for Carrington Laboratories Inc., was awarded the seventh annual International Aloe Science Council Chairman Yun-Ho Lee Award of Scientific Merit for an outstanding scientific contribution in the field of aloe research. Ni is currently group leader for research and a research fellow for DelSite Inc. The award is the highest competitive award presented by IASC.

Ingredient maker Pure World has named Dr. Qun Yi Zheng its new president. He replaces Natalie Koether. Zheng previously served as the company?s chief operating officer.

The Dietary Supplement Education Alliance has elected directors to lead the nonprofit organization in 2004. Elliot Balbert continues as the organization?s president, Jon Benninger is vice president and Michael McGuffin is secretary and treasurer. The Alliance also announced that it has joined the newly formed Coalition to Preserve DSHEA.

Jamieson Laboratories of Toronto has hired Donna Herringer as general manager of sales and marketing for Quest Vitamins and Jamieson Laboratories health food division, a new position. Herringer was previously president and CEO of the Canadian Health Food Association, and was also the national sales manager at Quest Vitamins for 14 years.

Soft Gel Technologies Inc. hired Kenn Israel as director of marketing. Israel brings to Soft Gel and its sister company, OptiPure, 15 years of experience in the nutrition industry. Israel will direct the growth and marketing of nutraceuticals such as Injuv, GlucoTrim and CoQsol.

Douglas Faggioli has been named the new president and CEO of Provo, Utah-based Nature?s Sunshine Products. Faggioli, who is also a company director, is a 20-year veteran of Nature?s Sunshine. He previously worked as chief operating officer and chief financial officer. He replaces Daniel P. Howells, who recently resigned.

Dan C. Swander, formerly president and COO of Minneapolis-based International Multifoods Corp., has left the company. Gary E. Costley, chairman and CEO, has assumed overall responsibility for the company?s operations.

Tom Lyman is the new sales and marketing manager for Merical Vita-Pak Inc., the Anaheim, Calif.-based custom contract packaging company. Lyman previously worked as an outside sales representative for Los Angeles Chemical and brings 10 years of sales experience in related industries to his new position.

Scott Backman is the new market development manager of functional food and food technology for LeGrange, Ill.-based Cognis Nutrition and Health. Backman brings 17 years of experience to the position and was most recently senior account manager for Sensient Colors in St. Louis. Cognis makes specialized ingredients for health and food products.

James S. Tonkin has resigned as president and CEO of BioEssentials Inc., a beverage company. Tonkin will work as a marketing consultant for the beverage and health industries.

Natural-Immunogenics Corp. of Pompano Beach, Fla., has appointed Dwight D. Fonda as vice president of operations. Fonda previously worked at Numico North America in Boca Raton, Fla., where he served as manager of technical projects, quality assurance and quality control.

Virox has hired Mary Burnett as director of sales for the U.S. market. Burnett brings to the position more than seven years of senior management experience in the natural products industry, including management roles with Levlad Inc./Nature?s Gate and Naturade.

Joe Fedele, co-chairman and chief executive officer of Garden City, New York-based FreshDirect, will step down. He will retain some responsibility for supply chain and business strategy at FreshDirect. Operations responsilbilities will be turned over to Jason Ackerman, president, and Chief Operating Officer Dean Furbush.

Desert Health Products Inc., of Scottsdale, Ariz., appointed Dr. Leonard Makowka as head of DHPI?s Medical Advisory Board. Makowka, a clinical and transplant surgeon and medical researcher, specializes in studying science relating to the liver. Royal Products Inc., a subsidiary of DHPI, will use Makowka?s name and endorsement on all its labels, brochures, sales literature and audio.

Stephen A. Bernier Jr. joined U.S. Mills as Eastern regional sales manager. Bernier has held positions at Cronig?s Market, Northeast Cooperatives and SGN Sales and Marketing, and will be responsible for the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions.
