Barbara O. Schneeman has been named to lead the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition?s Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling and Dietary Supplements. Lester M. Crawford, the Food and Drug Administration?s acting commissioner, announced the appointment April 12.
?Barbara comes to us with an extensive background in nutrition science that lines up perfectly with her new position as leader of the Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling and Dietary Supplements,? Crawford said in a prepared statement.
Schneeman has served as a faculty member of the University of California, Davis, since 1976, and for the past three years served as associate vice provost for university outreach, as well as holding a professional appointment in the departments of nutrition, food science and technology, and internal medicine in the School of Medicine. She was assistant administrator for nutrition in the Agricultural Research Service in the U. S. Department of Agriculture from 1999 to 2000.
Schneeman recently chaired the Institute of Medicine Dietary Supplement Safety Committee, which in April released its proposed framework report for evaluating dietary supplement ingredients. The document, Framework for Evaluating the Safety of Dietary Supplements, was jointly published by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council of the National Academies.
