Organic Exchange released its worldwide Organic Cotton Farm and Fiber Report 2008, which showed that the amount of organic cotton grown in 22 countries in 2007-08 increased 152 percent, to 145,872 metric tons.
India, Syria, Turkey, China, Tanzania, the U.S., Uganda, Peru, Egypt and Burkina Faso were the top 10 organic cotton-producing countries.
Despite the worldwide economic downturn, Organic Exchange anticipates organic cotton production to increase 54 percent in 2008-09 because of interest in environmentally friendly products.
