This week: Vital Farms spins off technology company | Former NFL player launches plant-based nutrition company

Almond Pro is adding to its catalog with the launch of Almond Protein Powder in two flavors: chocolate and vanilla. Each serving contains 19 grams of almond protein and 6 grams of natural fiber. It's made from the company's "pressurized extraction" technique, which it says reduces the amount of fat in almonds.

A new spinoff of Vital Farms, Ovabrite, in partnership with Israeli technology company Novatrans, developed a new technology designed to detect the gender and fertility of chicks during embryo development, so that hatcheries can remove male and infertile eggs before incubation and repurpose them for human consumption, in turn preventing the culling of male chicks post-incubation. 

Hydrosol, a supplier of customer-specific stabilizing and texturing systems, will present a line new products at this year’s Gulfood Manufacturing in Dubai, including functional systems for desserts, milk and yogurt drinks, reconstituted cream cheese alternatives, and low-fat mayonnaise without starch.

Former NFL player Chris Manderino has launched LYFE Fuel. Its first product, Daily Essential shakes, are plant-based meal replacement shakes that contain organic greens, vitamins and minerals, CoQ-10, digestive enzymes, proteins, omega-3s and more. 

Sprout Foods is now packaging eight of its products in transparent pouches so parents can see what's inside, with plans to release 20 clear pouches by December.

Organic switchel maker CideRoad has added three new direct-store distributors in New Jersey and Pennsylvania: BK Distributor, All Beverage and Mom's Beverage.
