Whole Foods? proposed acquisition of Wild Oats may proceed, a federal judge ruled today, blocking an injunction by the Federal Trade Commission. Whole Foods announced its intent to buy Boulder, Colo.-based Wild Oats for $565 million in February. In June, the FTC moved to block the transaction on grounds that the deal would hinder competition in the natural and organic channel. The two chains argued that conventional supermarkets also offer considerable rivalry. Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market has 190 stores, and Wild Oats Markets has 110. Stock in both chains soared on the news.
