BEVsystems Intl Inc has signed an agreement with Alfresh Beverages of Canada for the exclusive distribution of BEVsystems' Life O2 SuperOxygenated Water in Canada. Alfresh expects to sell 150,000 cases of Life O2 during the first 12 months of the agreement, beginning Oct. 2002. Double-blind studies have suggested that super-oxygenated water may improve performance and endurance, reduce body stress, increase extension strength, decrease pulse rate and improve ability to maintain stable blood-glucose levels.
ABP Seals Purchase
Associated British Foods (ABF) will buy the Novartis food and beverage business for 272.5 million, according to the Swiss health care group. Novartis, Europe's third-largest pharmaceutical company, put several of its nutrition brands up for sale in February in order to divest non-core health and functional foods products. Other Novartis health brands and the sports nutrition range, which includes the energy drink Isostar, are still up for sale.
Caprolactam in China
DSM (the Netherlands) and Sinopec (People's Republic of China) have entered into a joint venture to be called DSM Nanjing Chemical Company (DNCC). The new company is aimed at giving DSM a manufacturing presence for caprolactam in the expanding Asian markets.
NIH Studies Selenium
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) is conducting the trial, "Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease With Vitamin E and Selenium," using Sabinsa's Selenium SeLECT. The study, using human subjects, will evaluate the potential role of vitamin E and selenium in preventing memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease. Animal and tissue culture studies of vitamin E and selenium have shown that they can protect brain cells from degenerative damage.
Lattey Joins RFI
RFI Ingredients in New York state has named Steven Lattey vice president, Western region, for its functional foods/dietary supplements business unit. Lattey, who will be based in California, will serve as liaison between RFI and strategic alliance partner BI Nutraceuticals. Lattey was formerly director of sales at Altex Corp of Canada.
Taste Of Excellence
Xenadrine High Protein Weight Control Bar, manufactured by Cytodyne Technologies, was awarded the 2002 Gold Medal for Excellence and designated America's best-tasting protein bar by the American Tasting Institute of San Francisco. The institute's award judges are chefs and food critics from across the US.
Rose Named President
Randy J Rose has been named president and CEO of Enzymatic Therapy Inc of Wisconsin. Rose joins the company from Energizer Holdings Inc, where he was president and CEO for North American and European operations.
True Innovation Glanbia's TruCal Real Calcium from Milk was honored as one of seven finalists in the Most Innovative Ingredient category at the fifth annual Food Ingredients South America awards ceremony in São Paulo, Brasil. The ingredients were judged on innovation characteristics in market application, formulation and manufacturing practices. Judges were from Yakult, Kraft, BASF and Unicamp.
The Eighth Annual Socially Responsible Business awards, whose purpose is to recognise companies that have excelled in socially responsible business practices, were presented to the following companies during Natural Products Expo East in October. Winners were Indigenous Designs of California, La Siembra Co-operative of Canada, Seventh Generation of Vermont, and Tom's of Maine.
Central Soya Co is donating nearly $500,000 in Alpha Plus 26M, a powdered whole-milk replacement product, to LeSEA Global Feed the Hungry, an international humanitarian relief organisation, both based in Indiana. The product will go to Africa, parts of Europe, and to Central and South America. Alpha Plus 26M is one of several products in a new line of clinically tested alpha protein products.
Treatt USA Relocates
As part of several strategic changes, Treatt PLC has relocated its US facility from Haines to Lakeland, Florida, and renamed the company Treatt USA. The relocation is intended to enable the company to broaden its product range and enhance processing and blending capacity. The company also appointed John Boddington, PhD, to manager of natural products, from his former position in natural research in the company's UK office.
