In the late 1800s, homeopathic medicine played a strong if minority role in American healthcare. In 1876, up to 13% of medical practitioners in the United States were homeopaths, and by 1880 they operated 14 of the nation’s medical schools—compared to 76 run by allopathic physicians. But by the middle of the 20th century, the professional practice of homeopathy was all but obsolete. What happened? And does its history hold any lessons for the dietary supplements industry today?
