AHPA staff to discuss GMPs at AHG symposium

American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) President Michael McGuffin and AHPA Information Analyst Merle Zimmermann, Ph.D., will present at the Regulatory and GMP Compliance for Herbalists workshop on Nov. 7, a pre-conference for the American Herbalists Guild's (AHG) 24th annual Symposium at the Riverhouse Resort and Conference Center in Bend, Oregon. McGuffin and Zimmermann's presentations are part of an interactive, all-day, pre-conference workshop that features other industry experts such as BioNetwork's Sarah Schober and GreenTree Consulting's R. Erin Leary and Eric McKinney.

The workshop, sponsored by AHG and AHPA, will guide participants through the basic steps of regulatory compliance for small herbal businesses. It will provide information on current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), regulatory compliance, claim and labeling requirements, alcohol tax rebates and recent cGMP enforcement actions of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Participants will be guided through a mock production of a product, including claim and labeling requirements, in order to give them the practical experience with current regulations.

The theme of the broader symposium, scheduled Nov. 8 to 10, is "Celebrating the Abundance in Herbalism." The symposium will offer a schedule of more than 45 lectures, clinical case studies, discussions, and herb walks.
