About 1,000 children with chronic illnesses will be summer campers at The Painted Turtle each year. But what sets the newest member in the Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camps apart is its natural bias and working organic garden.
Executive Director Joe Glorfield said the organic bent is key to the camp's back-to-the-earth theme and part of a mission to help kids learn to eat healthier.
"Their prospects for living a long life are quite good providing they are medically compliant and if they lead a healthy, good life," he said.
"It pains me to see kids walking around with a Coca-Cola after being ill for so long."
Glorfield said he dreams of the day every conventional product used at the camp is replaced with something produced naturally and sustainably, and he's calling on the naturals industry to help reach that goal.
The Painted Turtle has formed an advisory board that will meet at Natural Products Expo West to solicit ideas about the mission and goals of the camp. Board members are Nell Newman, founder, Newman's Own Organics; Andi Hendrix, purchasing and sales vice president, UNFI; Jean Greenfield, regional buyer, Northern California Division, Whole Foods Market; and Kate Frame, director of West Coast sales, Newman's Own Organics.
