NCI Looks to Nutraceuticals
Bethesda, Md.Representing a paradigm shift in the focus of government-sponsored cancer research, the National Cancer Institute, located here, begins participant selection this month for a clinical trial to test a nutraceutical's ability to combat cancer.
The government agency will use SelenoExcell high selenium yeast, supplied by Fresno, Calif.-based Cypress Systems. The trial will enroll 2,000 men and women who have been surgically treated for stage I non-small cell lung cancer. Participants in the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial will take one 200 mcg tablet each day. Natrol, a manufacturer based in Chatsworth, Calif., will make both the selenium tablet and the placebo.
