Scientific Track Chairs

Clare M. Hasler, Ph.D., was appointed in 1992 as executive director of the Functional Foods for Health Program, a joint effort between the University of Illinois' Chicago (UIC) and Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campuses. The FFH Program is an internationally recognized research and education program devoted to the study of how phytochemicals and other functional components may prevent disease and promote health.

Hasler teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at UIC and UIUC on functional foods and the role of phytochemicals in disease prevention.

Paul A. Lachance, Ph.D., F.A.C.N., is executive director of The Nutraceuticals Institute and professor of nutrition and food science, both at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His areas of expertise include changes in micronutrients during processing and food preparation, food nutrification, nutraceuticals, food and nutrient intakes of Americans, and food/nutrition policy issues.

Lachance played a pivotal role in the development of food and nutrition programs for the Manned Spacecraft Center of NASA. He was the first flight food and nutrition coordinator for NASA (1963-67), where he established the Gemini/Apollo flight food systems.
