Evidence-Based Products: Weight-loss
Tonalin
ABOUT THE COMPANY: Natural Inc., is a division of Norwegian Natural Ltd., a leading developer of scientifically based ingred-ients for the worldwide nutrition industry.
STUDY CLAIM: When 25 obese men with metabolic disorders took conjugated linoleic acid for four weeks, they decreased abdominal fat without concomitant effects on overall obesity or other cardiovascular risk factors.
PUBLISHED: Risérus U. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduced abdominal adipose tissue in obese middle-aged men with signs of the metabolic syndrome: a randomized, controlled trial. Int J Obes 2001 Aug 25(8):1129-35.
ABSTRACT: Abdominal obesity is strongly related to metabolic disorders. Researchers discovered that dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduces body fat and may improve metabolic function in animals. In this four-week, double-blind, randomized, controlled study, researchers investigated the short-term effect of CLA on abdominal fat and cardiovascular risk factors on 25 abdominally obese men ages 39 to 64. The subjects' average waist-to-hip ratio was 1.05±0.05 and body mass index (BMI) was 32±2.7 kg/m.2 Fourteen men received 4.2 g/day CLA and 10 men received placebo. The main endpoints showed differences between the two groups in sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, triglycerides, free fatty acids, glucose and insulin. At baseline, there were no significant differences between the groups in anthropometric or metabolic variables. After four weeks, there was a significant decrease in SAD (cm) in the CLA group compared with placebo. There were no significant differences between the two groups' anthropometry and metabolism measurements.
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: A naturally occurring fatty acid, CLA is intended for use among overweight and obese humans to reduce body fat and preserve muscle mass. Tonalin CLA is available in soft gel capsules, powders, bars, drinks and functional foods.

InterHealth
ABOUT THE COMPANY: InterHealth Nutraceuticals researches, develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes proprietary nutritional ingredients including dietary supplements, antioxidants, phytoestrogen/cardioprotectants, and zinc formulas for immunity and cell growth.
STUDY CLAIM: Forty-three young, obese women who took chromium nicotinate (ChromeMate), in addition to an exercise program, experienced significant weight loss and lowered insulin response to an oral glucose load.
PUBLISHED: Grant KE, et al. Chromium and exercise training: effect on obese women. Med Sci Sports Exerc 1997;29(8):992-8.
ABSTRACT: Chromium supplementation may affect various coronary artery disease (CAD) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) risks, including body weight and composition, basal plasma hormone and substrate levels, and oral glucose load response. This study examined the effects of 400 mcg/day chromium nicotinate supplementation, with or without exercise training, on these risk factors in 43 young, obese women.
Chromium nicotinate supplementation resulted in significant weight loss (69.7 lbs.) and lowered insulin response to an oral glucose load. Researchers concluded that high levels of chromium picolinate supplementation provide an effective means for young, obese women to lose weight. Exercise training combined with chromium picolinate supplementation may be more beneficial than exercise training alone for modification of certain CAD and NIDDM risk factors.
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: ChromeMate is a nutritional ingredient that can be used in a wide variety of supplements, nutraceutical foods and beverages.

Symbiotics
ABOUT THE COMPANY: Symbiotics Inc., founded in 1995, distributes colostrum derived solely from pasture-fed cows. It is available in capsules, powders, skin creams, high-protein drinks, and chewable tablets.
STUDY CLAIM: Active men and women who took 20 g/day bovine colostrum combined with exercise training for eight weeks increased bone-free lean body mass.
PUBLISHED: Antonio J, et al. The effects of bovine colostrum supplementation on body composition and exercise performance in active men and women. Nutrition 2001;17:243-7.
ABSTRACT: The study was designed to determine the effect of eight-week bovine colostrum supplementation on body weight, composition, muscle endurance, and exercise performance in active men and women ages 18 to 25. Twenty-two participants were randomly assigned to placebo (whey protein) or 20 g/day colostrum powder. Each subject participated in aerobic and heavy-resistance training at least three times a week. A dual X-ray absorptionometry analysis helped assess body composition. Researchers documented participants' treadmill time to exhaustion, one repetition maximum strength (bench press), and the total number of repetitions performed during one set to exhaustion at a submaximal load for the bench press (50 percent and 100 percent body weight for women and men, respectively).
The colostrum group experienced a significant increase (p< 0.05) in bone-free lean body mass (mean increase of 1.49 kg), whereas the whey protein group experienced a significant increase (p< 0.05) in body weight (mean increase of 2.11 kg). There were no changes in any other measured parameters.
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: Colostrum may support the immune system, build lean muscle mass, increase strength and stamina, and reduce the effects of aging.
