Cutting the Fats

Remember shopping for your last car, and when you finally decided on a make and model it seemed as if that car was suddenly everywhere? Such serendipity occurs this month in NSN. A recent survey of 4,000 Michigan adults found only 3 percent achieved the four pillars of healthy living: avoid smoking, exercise regularly, eat a nutritious diet, and maintain normal weight. The last pillar in particular has Americans and the health care community on high alert.

Bad news, to be sure. But it offers opportunities to supplements manufacturers, which have been developing weight-loss products for people looking for a pill a day to keep the doctor away.

As any nutritionist will tell you, an apple a day is a better strategy. In "Natural News" this month, we report on a New England Journal of Medicine study revealing patients who had one-on-one nutrition counseling cut their diabetes risk three times more than those with no counseling.

According to Archives of Internal Medicine, obesity, besides contributing to diabetes and heart disease, may contribute to asthma.

In response to these and similar findings, the dietary supplements industry has sought ingredients to help overweight consumers. Our "Evidence-based Products" department features three companies with published research to back their weight-loss products. Key ingredients are conjugated linoleic acid, chromium picolinate, and colostrum. Another promising product is chitosan—read more about its hurdles in "Beyond the Label."

So when you want to know what to watch (besides your weight), look to NSN for information on companies producing ethical, scientifically validated products.

The Essential PUFA Guide for Dogs and Cats

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), along with antioxidant supplements, are important in maintaining healthy skin and coats in dog and cat companions. Incorporating these nutritional ingredients into conventional pet foods represents the next growth area in the pet food category.
