Ephedra Cleared in Death

EVANSTON, ILL.—Autopsy results of a college football player who died in a conditioning drill conclude that, while he had ephedra (Ephedra sinica) in his system, the stimulant herb did not cause his death. The Northwestern University football player, Rashidi Wheeler, was a chronic asthmatic. He collapsed during wind sprints on Aug. 3. The coroner, Edmund Donoghue, M.D., said, "This is a classic case of exercise-induced bronchial asthma."
