NSF International appoints legislative affairs director

Global public health organization NSF International has appointed Harold Chase, former Legislative Assistant for U.S. Senator Carl Levin, to lead NSF International’s Legislative Affairs office on Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C, which focuses on providing nonpartisan expertise to legislators on important public health and safety issues related to food safety, water quality, over-the-counter and pharmaceutical drugs quality, dietary supplement safety, sustainability and environmental health.

Since its founding in 1944, NSF International has been committed to protecting and improving public health through developing national standards and testing and certifying products that come into contact with food and water.  As part of this mission, NSF International provides technical and scientific expertise and research to legislators tasked with solving some of the nation’s most important public and environmental health issues.

In this role, Chase will provide legislators with education and technical subject matter expertise from NSF International on a wide range of public and environmental health issues. This includes arranging and facilitating meetings with Washington leaders and monitoring new and emerging legislation issues related to public health. In particular, Chase will focus on legislation related to the Farm Bill, the Food Safety Modernization Act, requirements for ballast water treatment systems that reduce invasive species in the nation’s waterways, national standards for sustainable products and services, water reuse, treating drinking water for emerging contaminants, dietary supplement safety and use  and the Toxic Substances Control Act, among others.

Prior to joining NSF International, Chase served as a Regional Representative and then Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Carl Levin. Chase advised Michigan’s Senior Senator on a wide range of issues such as the passage of both the Farm Bill and the Food Safety Modernization Act. While serving the Senator in Michigan, Chase worked on the protection of the Great Lakes from invasive species. He also coordinated appropriation requests, drafted legislation, amendments and floor statements and was responsible for governmental affairs issues considered by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

“The mission of NSF International is to protect and improve human health, a mission we share with legislators, committees, regulatory agencies and personnel whose job is to do the same. Government officials play a critical role in NSF standards development, conformity assessment programs, training and technical services. Not only does Harold Chase understand the importance of this role through his work with Senator Levin, but he also has the expertise necessary to expand NSF’s cooperation, collaboration and partnership with legislators on important issues that help them fulfill their public health protection responsibilities,” said Stan Hazan, Senior Director of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs at NSF International.

“I am excited to join the dedicated professionals at NSF International and to apply my 17 years of federal government service to helping NSF further its goal of protecting public health and safety. I look forward to working with legislators, their staffs and federal regulators to enhance the important role that third party certification and auditing plays in protecting our food, water and consumer products,” said Harold Chase, Director of Legislative Affairs at NSF International.

A native of Michigan, Chase earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Detroit Mercy.
