Maypro Group Secures New Dietary Ingredient Status for Oligonol(TM)

PURCHASE, NY, June 18, 2007 - Maypro Group today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification for the patented ingredient Oligonol(TM). The FDA accepted the notification in writing and without comment, concluding that Oligonol is safe and can now be legally marketed in the United States. Oligonol is an all-natural super antioxidant ingredient developed by Amino Up Chemical Company of Sapporo, Japan, which consists of oligomerized polyphenols that may help promote healthy aging*. As the exclusive U.S. distribution partner of Amino Up, Maypro will market and distribute Oligonol as a raw material to leading companies in the nutritional supplement industry. Quality of Life Labs, a subsidiary of Maypro, will be the first company to market a finished nutritional supplement containing Oligonol with the objective of building consumer awareness of the ingredient.

"This accomplishment is even more impressive given the extremely low number of NDIs that are accepted by the FDA, especially those with no comments," noted Marc Ullman of Ullman, Shapiro & Ullman, the law firm that managed the application and approval of Oligonol as an NDI.

A "new dietary ingredient" refers to a dietary ingredient that was not marketed in the United States prior to October 14, 1994. In order to achieve NDI status for Oligonol, Amino Up and Maypro, with the help of the Life Sciences Research Office, provided the FDA with extensive safety information and after thorough review, the FDA concluded that consumers could expect use of Oligonol to be safe.

"We continue to be at the forefront in developing innovative ingredients for various condition-specific segments, and securing NDI status reinforces our unwavering commitment to the safety of all our ingredients," added Steve Yamada, president of Maypro.

Oligonol is a first-of-its-kind oligomerized polyphenol. Polyphenols, abundantly present in plants, are known for their antioxidant and anti-aging properties. However, due to their high molecular weight, the absorption of polyphenols is limited. Oligonol is manufactured using a proprietary process developed by Amino Up that shortens polyphenol polymers from lychee fruit into monomers and short-chain oligomers, making them more bioavailable in the body. Oligonol exceeds traditional polyphenol products such as pine bark, grape seed and green tea in bioavailability and has higher antioxidant capacity in TEAC and lipid peroxidation assays. Just as oligomers are vital to the defense system of plants, Oligonol can help support the human defense system*. The current areas of research on Oligonol include anti-aging, skin improvement, metabolic syndrome, anti-inflammation and vasoconstriction (particularly for symptoms such as cold hands and feet).
