Baltimore Whole Foods shoppers surprised by in-store opera

It’d be hard to find employees as talented as the singers featured in the video below. Learning how to inventory correctly and greet customers well is difficult enough – hitting a high C note may be too much to ask.

On Wednesday, a Baltimore Whole Foods Market brought opera singers in from the Washington Opera's Young Artists Program to surprise customers and entice them to visit a symphony orchestra concert over the weekend. The performance was a complete surprise to shoppers, as the singers were dressed as employees and broke into song right in the middle of the lunch rush.

This particular stunt may be hard to pull off in your store, but the idea is feasible. Think about your community gems like the opera, The Humane Society, high schools, Girl Scout troops, recreation centers and more. In Boulder, Colo., for example, The Humane Society has a “Pet Care Cruiser,” that can go anywhere to facilitate adoptions of animals in need. Ramona Family Naturals in Ramona, Calif. utilizes the store’s customers to help install electricity and stock shelves—not pure entertainment, but the community gets involved and invested in the store.
