WACKER develops solid resin for gumbase production

CAPIVA S renders gumbase flexible and elastic even without additional elastomers or colophony resins.

WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, has developed a new solid resin that increases the efficiency of gumbase manufacturing. Gumbase is the water-insoluble constituent of chewing gum, and acts as a carrier for sugar, sweeteners and flavorings. The new CAPIVA® S considerably simplifies the process of manufacturing gumbase, as fewer ingredients are required during formulation. For instance, CAPIVA® S renders the gumbase flexible and elastic even without additional elastomers or colophony resins (rosins). At the same time, the chewing gum is easier to remove from surfaces, while benefiting from a longer shelf life. What’s more, the new solid resin ensures a faster release of flavor so that fewer flavorings are needed for a full flavor and so that the gum does not become bitter even after it has been chewed for some time. Altogether, the new CAPIVA® S can be used to produce high-quality, less sticky chewing gum faster and more efficiently.

The innovative CAPIVA® S solid resin was specifically developed to simplify gumbase manufacturing and to make it more efficient. Gum-base is the water-insoluble constituent of modern chewing gum and the carrier for sugar, sugar substitutes (polyols), sweeteners and flavorings.

The production of chewing gum is usually a complex process that is performed in several stages and uses a number of different ingredients. In some cases, the ingredients require intensive preparation and processing. The new CAPIVA® S greatly facilitates the production process, since fewer time-consuming steps and also fewer ingredients are necessary.

With CAPIVA® S, it is possible to produce not only normal chewing gum, but also bubble gum. What’s more, the required elasticity is achieved without additional elastomers and rosins. Added flavors are released faster, which reduces the overall quantity of valuable flavorings necessary for a full flavor. Since the new solid resin is highly resistant to oxidation, the chewing gum has a longer shelf life. On top of this, the resin is tasteless. Even after lengthy chewing, there’s no bitterness, or hardly any. One of the new solid resin’s key advantages is reduced adhesion. With CAPIVA® S, the gum is less sticky—which means it adheres poorly to surfaces and is much easier to remove. Altogether, the new CAPIVA® S can be used to produce high-quality gum faster and more efficiently.

The innovative solid resin is suitable for conventional manufacturing processes and equipment. The product has already been approved in Europe and China, and approval applications are being submitted in several other countries and regions, including the USA and South America. Additionally, WACKER has filed patents relating both to the manufacturing process for the new solid resin and to its application in chewing gum.
