MAASTRICHT: May 7, 2008 - VitaK announced today that MenaQ7™ natural vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 is the first product to earn the VitaK2™ Seal of Quality and Efficacy in both oil and powder form, for use in dietary supplements and food enrichment. VitaK2 is the trademark registered by VitaK at the Maastricht University as a quality label for vitamin K products with proven quality, efficacy and safety. Presently, MenaQ7™ is the only natural form of vitamin K that has earned the VitaK2 status. MenaQ7 has been tested extensively for absorption and bioavailability, safety, and efficacy in human studies.
According to Cees Vermeer, "We created the VitaK2 program to distinguish vitamin K2 ingredients that have proven safety and efficacy. MenaQ7, of the products that VitaK has evaluated, is the only product thus far that has demonstrated consistent quality as well as evidence of benefit in human studies, both in adults and in children."
This rigorous evaluation includes a demonstration of consistent menaquinone-7 levels from numerous commercial production batches, consistent organoleptic properties such as appearance and odor, absence of impurities, and most importantly, clinical evidence of bioavailability, bioactivity and efficacy in human trials.
"As an independent laboratory we are asked to evaluate vitamin K content in foods and supplements," continued Vermeer. "However, our group's name should not be used as an implied endorsement without thorough examination of a product. Now the VitaK2 Seal will effectively communicate that MenaQ7™ is the safe and effective product proven by our group."
MenaQ7 natural vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 is more potent than other K-vitamins such as K1, this is due to its slightly different chemical structure causing different pharmacokinetic properties.
Vitamin K2 has been shown in laboratory experiments, population based studies and clinical trials to be much more effective than K1 in preventing bone loss, promoting bone strength, significantly reducing the incidence of arterial calcification and promoting cardiovascular health.
