New Study Strengthens MSM’s Link with Exercise Recovery

A recent study funded by OptiMSM producer, Bergstrom Nutrition, offers new information regarding how the nutritional supplement helps reduce muscle soreness after increased exercise or new activities.

The benefits of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) just keep getting stronger. A recent study funded by OptiMSM producer, Bergstrom Nutrition, offers new information regarding how the nutritional supplement helps reduce muscle soreness after increased exercise or new activities.The study has been published in April’s issue of The FASEB Journal (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).

In a previous study published in 2012, it was determined that oral MSM significantly raises the antioxidant activity in the blood. This study, combined with previous studies, have shown the following:

•Confirmation that acute bouts of exercise can induce oxidative stress

•Daily oral MSM supplementation prior to exercise creates: –Significantly better glutathione plasma levels (increased antioxidant capacity) –Significantly less malondialdehyde (maintained normal levels) –Significantly less protein carbonyl levels (no negative oxidation reactions)

•Significantly less muscle soreness after exercise

•Significantly higher plasma oxidative capacity

•Significantly reduced markers of muscle damage

“The study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting MSM helps protect cells from damage following acute bouts of strenuous exercise—showing the potential real world application that goes along with supporting data from several previous studies,” said Rod Benjamin, Director of Technical Development for Bergstrom Nutrition. “Most people could care less if they have increased blood markers of oxidative stress; such as higher malondialdehyde, protein carbonyls or glutathione levels.
