Study shows POMELLA Extract increases plasma antioxidant capacity in humans

Noblesville, IN - A recent clinical pharmacokinetic trial has demonstrated that POMELLA® Extract standardized to the primary pomegranate ellagitannins punicalagins can deliver absorbable ellagic acid (EA) and other antioxidant metabolites, and cause antioxidant effects measured by plasma ORAC.(1)

The antioxidant capacity of plasma was increased in study participants by an overall average of 31.8% at 30 minutes after consumption. At six hours after baseline, a second plasma antioxidant peak of 31.7% was observed.

The absorption of POMELLA Extract was also evidenced by the detection of EA and other metabolites at 24 hours after baseline.

The multiple phases of extended absorption may be attributed to the diversity and potency of whole pomegranate compounds—particularly punicalagins—and the stages of the digestive system in which the proprietary array of beneficial compounds in POMELLA Extract are absorbed, although further research on the exact absorption mechanism is ongoing.

Punicalagins (twin anomers of the punicalagin molecule) can easily be absorbed after consumption, forming EA across membranes and in mitochondria, according to cell culture studies.(2) Additionally, human studies support the hydrolysis of punicalagins into ‘free’ EA in the bloodstream after consumption.(3,4)

This study, performed by Dr. Susanne Mertens-Talcott (Texas A&M University) and her research team, published online in the November edition of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, is believed to be one of the first published human clinicals where pomegranate extract increased the antioxidant capacity of plasma after consumption.

About POMELLA Extract:

POMELLA Extract is the patent-pending pomegranate extract standardized to punicalagins and found in published studies to absorb into the human body after consumption.

Made from the whole pomegranate’s natural spectrum, including ellagitannin content, POMELLA Extract is supported by efficacy and safety profiles.

POMELLA Extract, derived from the whole pomegranate fruit, is made at Verdure Sciences’ ISO-9000:2001, HACCP facility; is Kosher-certified and Halal-certified, and made from pomegranate grown on Verdure’s vertically integrated farms.
