AHPA wins Americans for Safe Access' Patient Partnership Award

Award recognizes AHPA's work in developing recommendations for regulators in states where medical cannabis is legal.

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) received the Patient Partnership Award from Americans for Safe Access (ASA) in recognition of AHPA's work during the past year in developing recommendations to state regulators in states where medical cannabis is legal under state law.

AHPA President Michael McGuffin accepted the award from Steph Sherer, ASA's executive director, at ASA's 10th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Ceremony in Washington.

ASA, founded by Sherer in 2002, is now the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists, and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research. ASA is dedicated to meeting the immediate needs of medical cannabis patients and their providers and works to create policies that improve access to medical cannabis for patients and researchers.

AHPA formed a Cannabis Committee in 2010 to address issues related to the safe use and responsible commerce of legally marketed products derived from Cannabis species. The committee's responsibilities include development of policy recommendations to regulators to support the safe use of these products for therapeutic use. Its work has been focused on cultivation, manufacturing, laboratory, and distribution practices, and recommendations to regulators on each of these are in the early stages of development.

"AHPA has been working closely with ASA over the past year to identify issues that need to be addressed to ensure safe patient access to medical cannabis in the states where its use is allowed under state law," said McGuffin. "Steph Sherer has provided invaluable insight to AHPA's understanding of these issues and has been instrumental in organizing this community."

In accepting the award, McGuffin acknowledged the AHPA board of trustees for "its vision in enlarging the AHPA tent to include medical cannabis." He also expressed appreciation for the many AHPA members who are active in the committee's work. "As with all AHPA committees, our members contribute expertise by sharing their knowledge and experience, while AHPA simply provides a forum for this process," he said.
