A.M. Todd Botanical Therapeutics announced today that the company has received the first batches of DHEA produced following the lifting of the Chinese government export ban on the ingredient earlier this year. In a build up to the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, authorities in China initiated a self-imposed embargo on the manufacture and export of DHEA.
Corey Norton, Director of Sales stated, “We have been monitoring this situation for some time and have worked closely with our manufacturing partner to secure material as soon as the government lifted its restrictions.” The total suspension of supply has left many dietary supplement manufacturers and marketers in stock out positions in recent months.
Previously, in late 2007, the Chinese government ratcheted up requirements for any export shipments of DHEA to the United States. Norton adds, “On top of the supply challenges, a rigorous and substantive ‘process of authentication’ is now required that can take months to execute between multiple departments within both country’s governments.” A.M. Todd was the first U.S. Company to obtain Chinese certification of compliance for the export of DHEA.
With ongoing attention in the U.S. focused on the marketing of DHEA, The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) recently announced that its members had adopted a new voluntary program for responsible marketing of Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The program centers on refraining from language suggesting a general anabolic steroid-like response and targeting the product to those under 18 years of age. Steve Mister, president and CEO of CRN stated, “This is an important step forward in self-regulation by the dietary supplement industry, and we encourage other companies to join our members in following these guidelines.” Other trade associations are considering a similar DHEA policy for their memberships.
Norton concludes, “Taking the responsible path to properly secure this material has been long, but it has provided us with a strong and favorable supply position. The fact that our efforts culminated the week of Supply Side West is a bit ironic; it is great news for us as well as for key industry decision makers attending the show”.
