RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA –Blue California, an ingredient manufacturer in Southern California, is pleased to announce overwhelming attendance and interest at their scientific lecture presented at SupplyExpo 2005 in Anaheim, CA.
The tradeshow broke historical records with more than 38,000 attendees from 83 countries and several scientific seminars. Macular pigment researcher John Landrum, Ph.D presented Blue California’s seminar entitled Lutein & Zeaxanthin: Recent Progress in Understanding the Role of Carotenoids in the Human Retina. Landrum shared his extensive knowledge of the carotenoids that compose the human macular pigment.
Cecilia McCollum, Blue California’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, states, “I am very proud of Blue California's commitment to quality, science and educational programs. I was very pleased to see that Dr. Landrum’s presentation on lutein was so well attended. It certainly encourages our company to continue our effort to support our industry with scientific presentations of this caliber. We are working on several other seminars and conferences for this year, including our Lutein seminar in Tokyo, at Health Ingredients Japan in October 2005.” McCollum believes that participants gained a better understanding of the role lutein plays in preventing age-related macular degeneration.
John T. Landrum, PhD, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida International University in Miami, was pleased with the seminar’s outcome. “I enjoyed my visit to SupplyExpo and the opportunity to talk about the nature and function of carotenoids in the macula. We had a very good group of people present.” When asked why lutein is so important to vision, Landrum explained, “The macular pigment is composed of lutein and zeaxanthin and lower levels of these carotenoids in the eye are correlated with an increased likelihood for macular degeneration. It is possible to increase macular pigment levels in the eyes of many people through the consumption of a diet that is rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin.”
