California Governor Signs Bill to Ban Ephedrine-Containing Supplements

California Governor Gray Davis yesterday signed SB 582, making the sale of dietary supplements containing any amount of “ephedrine group alkaloids” in California a crime beginning January 1, 2004.

The law does not apply to over-the-counter or prescription drugs that contain ephedrine alkaloids, and licensed health care practitioners are exempt from the ban, except that they are specifically prohibited for dispensing these products for weight loss, body building, or athletic performance enhancement.

Sale to a licensed health care practitioner and to a licensed pharmacist is permitted providing petients are treated under the direct care of the health care practitioner.
