VANCOUVER, Wash., August 22, 2003--George Edwin Bergstrom III, a man widely respected for his leadership in the natural products industry, died Aug. 9, 2003, at Southwest Washington Medical Center after a courageous fight against vascular lymphoma. Bergstrom was admired for his uncompromising integrity and quick wit. He was 63.
"The industry has truly lost a `quiet giant'," said Michael D. Levin, Cardinal Nutrition's president and chief operating officer. "George was an unassuming man, wholly committed to applying advanced science to improve the public's health. A responsible scientist who led his company with uncompromising integrity and a solid commitment to continuous quality improvement, George touched many lives."
"George walked the talk. His legacy lives on in the corporate values our employees embrace, in the MSM research he supported, in the charitable programs he initiated and in the hearts of all those who knew him," Levin said.
Bergstrom, a chemical engineer, cofounded Cardinal Nutrition in Vancouver in 1988. The company introduced methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a widely used nutritional ingredient discovered and developed in the Pacific Northwest. Cardinal has since become the leading global manufacturer of MSM.
Through his vision of bringing the benefits of premium food-grade MSM to a broad audience, Bergstrom's accomplishments were far reaching. He guided Cardinal's growth through research and development initiatives, and performed charitable work alongside Cardinal employees.
In March, Bergstrom announced his intention to step down from daily business operations, promoting Michael D. Levin to president and chief operating officer, and R. Grant Bergstrom to vice president of operations.
Cardinal Nutrition has named Roma Bergstrom, George Bergstrom's widow, its new chief executive officer. Mrs. Bergstrom will also serve as chairperson on Cardinal Nutrition's board of directors.
A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 15, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash. Memorial donations may be made to The Vancouver Rotary Foundation c/o G. Bergstrom Vitamins for Children, P.O. Box 1000, Vancouver, Wash. 98666 or The Organization Dedicated to Athletics and Youths (TODAY), 15525 NE Caples Rd., Brush Prairie, Wash. 98606.
