LAS VEGAS - Cargill is launching a new ingredient called CoroWise™ Instant plant sterol esters as part of the industry-leading CoroWise™ line of plant sterols. This product is ideal for development of new heart-healthy products, such as instant beverage and soup mixes, ready-to-drink beverages, bars and cereals.
CoroWise™ Instant plant sterol esters are produced from natural vegetable extracts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says certain foods containing certain levels of plant sterol esters may carry the claim of “may help reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.” Moreover, CoroWise™ Instant plant sterol esters provide the heart health benefit while preserving the good taste of food and beverage products.
“Now more than ever, consumers are craving great taste that is heart healthy and convenient. We are proud that leading food companies are incorporating CoroWise™ plant sterols into their products. Leading food companies are making it easier than ever for people to find great tasting foods and beverages, and high quality supplements that help them protect their cardiovascular system,” said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT).
Plant sterols have been researched and used for more than 50 years with no known adverse effects. The overall effect in clinical studies has been a reduction in average “bad” (LDL) cholesterol of 8-15 percent.
Based on data from various studies, a daily intake of at least 1.3 grams of plant sterol esters as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol helps lower blood cholesterol levels, therefore reducing the risk of heart disease.
Cargill H&FT helped trigger an FDA action that allows a broader range of foods, beverages and supplements using plant sterols to put the heart health claim on their labels. Since then, Cargill H&FT has worked with a number of manufacturers to create innovative heart healthy products. Consumers can expect to see the CoroWise™ brand name on even more food, beverage and supplement labels in the future.
