Cargill To Expand OptaFlex(TM) Natural Chondroitin Manufacturing Capabilities in the U.S.

MINNEAPOLIS - June 6, 2005 - Cargill has completed engineering for a planned expansion of OptaFlex™ natural chondroitin sulfate manufacturing capabilities at its Denver, Colo., facility within the next few months. Cargill’s OptaFlex™ chondroitin sulfate is a natural proprietary form of chondroitin sulfate that is produced from a water-based process, delivering superior taste and functionality in food and supplement applications.

“Joint health is an integral piece of our mission of nourishing people and accelerating health innovation,” said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill Health & Food Technologies . “Chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine are cornerstones of the joint health market, and Cargill has a strong and growing market presence with both products. In addition, Cargill has a secure, integrated supply chain of North American raw materials, to insure reliable supply.

Previously, Cargill announced the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status of its OptaFlex™ natural chondroitin sulfate. The GRAS status permits chondroitin to be used in a variety of foods, including beverages, which has resulted in a number of innovative customer projects.

“Cargill understands our customers’ need for joint health solutions and has demonstrable application development capabilities which can help our customers deliver solutions to consumers,” said Ziemann.

Cargill’s Health & Food Technologies business is part of a larger Cargill initiative called Food System Design. As part of Food System Design, Cargill Health & Food Technologies works in concert with customers to produce ingredients, ingredient systems and food system breakthroughs that result in appetizing, nutritious and convenient consumer products.
