Cargill’s Oliggo-Fiber® Inulin Receives Top Honors in Wellness Foods’ 2005 Readers’ Choice Awards

MINNEAPOLIS – Cargill’s Oliggo-Fiber® inulin tied for first place in its category in the Wellness Foods’ 2005 Readers’ Choice Awards for the best suppliers of nutritional ingredients. Inulin was among the 10 primary ingredient categories about which 9,100 readers, representing all categories of the food and beverage industry, were surveyed. Voters were allowed to use their own criteria to assess each brand. Wellness Foods magazine is specifically targeted to food and beverage processors that produce natural, organic, fortified, nutritional and functional products.

Research indicates that inulin may enhance dietary calcium absorption, particularly among preteens and postmenopausal women. This is in addition to this natural fiber’s contribution to the total dietary fiber content of the American diet.

Calcium absorption is important, as according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), calcium plays an important role in maintaining bone health. The NOF states that osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans, or 55 percent of people age 50 or older. In the United States, 10 million individuals (eight million women and two million men) are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis.*

“Inulin is an important nutritional ingredient, and its use in food and beverages is growing rapidly in the United States. We are pleased to have our customers and peers recognize the benefits of using Oliggo-Fiber® inulin, including enabling consumer packaged goods companies to incorporate increased amounts of fiber into products without affecting taste and texture,” said Steve Snyder, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Cargill Health & Food Technologies. “Cargill is committed to integrating consumer insight with expertise in ingredient formulation and food systems technology to help our customers develop products that meet the needs of today’s consumers.”
