Since 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all breastfed infants receive 200 IU of supplemental vitamin D. Today the Academy announced it has revised its recommendation stating that infants from birth onward receive 400 IU of supplemental vitamin D.
Carlson Laboratories asked Dr. Reinhold Vieth, an Internationally Recognized and Renowned Published Expert on vitamin D nutrition, what he thought about the policy change. Dr. Vieth stated, "To its credit, the American Academy of Pediatrics has taken to heart what we know about the dose of vitamin D that babies need, and the evidence that vitamin D is important for more than just bone health. Parents who ignore the advice of their pediatricians are gambling with the health of their babies. Why gamble with something so simple as vitamin D?" Dr. Reinhold Vieth is a Professor at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. He is also the Director of Bone and Mineral Laboratory, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
John Carlson, President of Carlson Laboratories commented, “Research about the health benefits of vitamin D is continuing to grow, and we are excited about the positive medical attention that helps raise public awareness about this important vitamin and its role in improving the health of the next generation. Carlson is proud to offer Baby Ddrops, a liquid vitamin D3 supplement, concentrated into the cleanest purest form, which provides a tasteless 400 IU dose of vitamin D3 in each drop. We have heard from mothers who are so happy to have a product like this available, there is no unpleasant taste or clumsy droppers."
