Chrysantis And ZeaVision Sign Licensing Agreement

West Chicago, IL (April 25, 2005) – ZeaVision, L.L.C. and Chrysantis, Inc., announce they have entered into a licensing agreement for the marketing and selling of zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin (pronounced zee-uh-zan’-thun) is a dietary carotenoid found in the macula, the central part of the retina in the eye that is responsible for most fine vision. Zeaxanthin is thought to be a critical nutrient for eye health and has other health benefit implications.

According to the announcement, Chrysantis has been granted a limited, non-exclusive license to ZeaVision’s patents related to zeaxanthin. ZeaVision is the holder of a wide ranging patent estate on the use of zeaxanthin in supplements and food products.

Beginning in 1998, Chrysantis set its sights in finding Marigolds capable of producing carotenoids other than lutein. Backed by 40 years of successful experience in Marigold breeding, it has developed a unique high-ratio zeaxanthin-to-lutein Marigold.

A typical Marigold flower carotenoid profile is 80 percent lutein and 5 percent zeaxanthin. Chrysantis has a wide range of proprietary zeaxanthin-lutein Marigolds with profiles that range from 75 percent zeaxanthin and 5 percent lutein to 50 percent zeaxanthin and 50 percent lutein. Chrysantis’ branded extracts are called EZ Eyes™.

Terry Hatfield, President of ZeaVision LLC, said that “We are very pleased to have Chrysantis as a licensee for producing, selling and marketing zeaxanthin. We are also very pleased to have a unique source of natural dietary zeaxanthin. Chrysantis will help in building awareness about the importance of zeaxanthin in eye health, which has the potential to positively impact millions of people that either have or are at risk of having macular degeneration. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in adults. “

Manuel Pavon, General Manager of Chrysantis said, “Macular degeneration is one of the age-related conditions which people are learning to guard against. Recent research indicates that zeaxanthin supplementation is particularly important for women and for over weight people, making it a vital component of many supplement formulas.”

Chrysantis is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ball Horticulture based in West Chicago, IL. It is dedicated to developing high-quality plant-based products for dietary supplement manufacturers and the functional foods industry that will enhance human health.

Family-owned Ball Horticultural Company has been researching, breeding and selling the highest-quality flower seed varieties for 100 years. The company’s understanding of flower color and the compounds that are responsible for color (carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids) led to the creation of Chrysantis, Inc which aims to bring those products to market.

Zeavision LLC, is based in St. Louis, Mo. It is focused on the development and marketing of zeaxanthin-based supplements for the eye. Dietary zeaxanthin is considered a critical nutrient in the eye and in the fight against macular degeneration. The company has commercialized several eye health supplements and is in the process of launching a new line of products for macular health called EyePromise™. These products will be marketed through ophthalmologist and other eye care professionals, along with a direct order process. The company will also expand its offerings to other eye-health related products for other eye care conditions, such as cataracts and dry eyes, as well as, other health related areas where zeaxanthin has shown a positive effect, such as skin health and protection.
