CLEVELAND, Aug 04, 2005 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- In a pioneering move intended to achieve new standards in personal health and wellness, The Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation's largest and most prestigious medical centers, and Canyon Ranch, the renowned wellness and life enhancement company, have entered into an agreement to offer new and innovative programs intended to integrate the best practices of traditional medicine with the latest advancements in wellness, healthy living and prevention.
"This collaboration introduces a new form of healthcare delivery built around being and staying well, rather than being ill," said Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President of the Cleveland Clinic. "It combines the very best of diagnostics, prevention and intervention with the most comprehensive life enhancement programs to assist people in achieving and maintaining optimal health. This relationship also furthers the Clinic's charitable mission of education, teaching and research to improve the overall health of the population."
Discussions about this collaboration began in late 2004 and were inspired by the realization that there is currently no singular source of both medical and wellness programs available to individuals who are seeking an integrated approach to optimal health. The need for such programming is clear, as evidenced by the alarming growth of chronic illnesses attributable to lifestyle choices, diet, stress and obesity.
Through this collaboration, The Cleveland Clinic and Canyon Ranch will jointly develop programs in disease prevention, general medicine, nutrition, behavioral health and exercise physiology. "The Cleveland Clinic/Canyon Ranch Optimal Health Program," a unique multi-day executive health and wellness offering is being developed, with special emphasis on long-term weight control, stress management, cardiac care and healthy lifestyle education, resulting in a tailored lifestyle prescription for the individual.
"The lifestyle choices we make today - how we eat, deal with stress, the amount of exercise and family time we allow ourselves -- have a cumulative effect on our health and wellbeing. Our two organizations share a commitment to provide education and programs that will help people optimize their health in a sustainable, holistic way," commented Canyon Ranch CEO Jerrold Cohen.
The programs in development will be delivered both personally and "virtually" through the Internet. They will be offered at Canyon Ranch's Tucson, Arizona and Lenox, Massachusetts life enhancement resorts, and facilities found within its new Living communities, and at The Cleveland Clinic. The agreement includes a medical staff exchange between the organizations, a new "Optimal Health Program" that goes beyond the traditional executive health physical to incorporate integrative programs involving preventive medicine, nutrition, behavioral health, movement therapies, healing arts and fitness.
The organizations are also in the process of developing programs that would be available "virtually" through a wide range of Internet-based initiatives including a "Virtual Cleveland Clinic/Canyon Ranch" online portal that provides personalized health and wellness advice and information to guests, patients and employees. Comprehensive medical records will transfer seamlessly from one organization to the other, thereby providing practitioners with access to the information they require to assure the optimal level of care.
Canyon Ranch and Cleveland Clinic physicians will also have instant access to each other's expertise through the construction of state-of-the-art telemedicine centers located at the Canyon Ranch and Cleveland Clinic facilities. These centers will facilitate collaborative consultation on optimal programs for each guest or patient. An initial six jointly-appointed staff physicians will work together and with other allied health and wellness professional to maximize the benefit to both guests and patients who utilize the new programs and services. Additionally, this team will lead the initiatives to expand the education and research around integrative wellness modalities.
