Cognis Nutrition & Health Echoes 2008 IFT Theme: ‘Driving Growth and Sustainability through Innovation’ – Renews Commitment to Education Sponsorship

June 29, 2008, New Orleans, La. – Sustainable business is more than a philosophy at Cognis, according to the leading supplier of health-enhancing ingredients for the world’s major food and beverage companies. “Cognis Nutrition & Health is especially proud to again sponsor the general session and educational programming related to this year’s IFT theme, ‘Driving Growth and Sustainability through Innovation’, said Dave Eckert, Vice President, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “Our focus on renewable raw materials that are naturally sourced provides our customers with beneficial ingredients that appeal to consumers’ high standards for safety, quality and nutritional value.”

Mr. Eckert explained that offering innovative, value-added products and concepts requires a special team with expertise in addressing the technical and sensory hurdles often inherent in creating healthy foods. “Our soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art applications laboratory will give our expanded technical team the added resources to help our customers as they develop innovative new products and improve existing ones. This investment demonstrates that supplying the right ingredient at the right time in the right place is just one part of our business. Increasingly, our customers come to rely on Cognis for a broad spectrum of services from applications know-how to scientific research to product ideation.”

Focus on Heart Health

Cognis is showcasing heart health at this year’s IFT, featuring food and beverage samples including Heart Choice® natural phytosterols, Omevital™ omega-3 fatty acids, and Covitol® natural vitamin E. All of the nutritional ingredients supplied by Cognis are naturally sourced from renewable resources that contribute to environmental sustainability.

Dr. Richard Collins, nationally recognized as “The Cooking Cardiologist®,” will support Cognis’ heart health theme with cooking demonstrations featuring Heart Choice® natural plants sterols. The recipes he will be sharing are from his new cookbook, “Cooking with Heart”, which Dr. Collins will be autographing at the Cognis booth.

In other IFT news, Cognis is launching Xangold® 8% WDP, natural lutein esters in a water-dispersible powder. The Xangold® product line, known as the gold standard for eye health, also contributes to skin health and radiance in “Beauty from Within” foods and beverages.

Beauty Benefits through Nutrition

Targeting the hot topic of “Beauty from Within”, Cognis is launching a series of concepts to help customers create foods and beverages that reduce stress, protect skin, and enhance healthy aging. Multiple Cognis ingredients support these personal care concepts including Betatene® natural mixed carotenoids, Tonalin® CLA, Xangold® natural lutein esters, Omevital® omega-3 fatty acids, and Covitol® natural vitamin E. A new “Beauty from Within” brochure summarizes the many beauty benefits of Cognis ingredients.

Market data shows that consumers, especially baby boomers, clearly want foods and beverages that can enhance their health and physical appearance. According to Mintel & Datamonitor, “winners” of the hundreds of new beauty foods and supplements to be launched are predicted to be breakfast beauty drinks and snacks, indulgent products such as chocolate beauty bars, and products with innovative delivery systems such as chewing gum. Cognis is working with customers to help them identify market opportunities, select ingredients, and successfully position their products for this rapidly growing market.

One example of an effective beauty booster supported by scientific studies is lutein. Products containing Cognis’ Xangold® natural lutein esters allow food and beverage makers to market the many functional beauty benefits including:

  • Helps improve skin hydration and elasticity
  • Improves skin moisture
  • Helps protect against UV damage from sunlight

Cognis is also showcasing Tonalin® CLA as an effective “body shaper” to give consumers the lean, slim contour they desire. Tonalin® CLA helps reduce body fat by decreasing the amount of fat stored and increasing the rate of fat metabolism. Research has shown CLA is especially effective in reducing body fat around the waist and thighs. Tonalin® CLA is available in several product forms – oil, water-dispersible powder and emulsions – which offer food manufactures a broad range of options and easy processing for their new products. Tonalin® CLA is naturally sourced and is not labeled as a trans fat. Tonalin® CLA is stimulant-free and can be used long term to support a healthy lifestyle.

Covitol® natural vitamin E is a hallmark of Cognis’ ingredient portfolio and a proven nutrient for skin to enhance healthy aging. As a powerful antioxidant, Covitol® protects the skin from free radical damage. Natural vitamin E is officially recognized as being twice as biologically active as the synthetic version.
