Cognis Reaffirms Customer Focus, Commitment to Science at SupplySide West Trade Show

December 5, 2002, Las Vegas, NV -- Cognis Nutrition and Health leaders announced new products and services as part of the company’s enhanced customer-driven strategy at the annual SupplySide West International Trade Show & Conference on Dec.4-6, 2002 in Las Vegas.

“Innovation is a watchword at Cognis,” said Paul Allen, Group Vice President, Cognis Nutrition and Health. “We realize that in today’s world of heightened competition and increasing expectations, we must go the extra step to meet our customers’ needs in a truly excellent fashion. Our products and services demonstrate that being customer-focused is a reality at Cognis and not just a tagline,” Mr. Allen emphasized.

“Launching our new VEGAPURE™ vegetable sterols esters and self-affirming XANGOLD® natural lutein esters as GRAS are the results of input we received from our customers,” he said. “We pay close attention to market trends and work with our customers to anticipate the demand for new products. And regardless of the product or idea, we realize that science must provide the foundation for everything we do.” Mr. Allen explained that over the last year, Cognis reorganized around market segments to better learn about our customers’ preferences and priorities, and then developed solutions to meet their specific needs.

He pointed out that the Nutrition and Health division has grown dramatically from its roots as a leading supplier of antioxidants to the dietary supplement industry. Today it also provides nature-based ingredients for products in pharmaceuticals and healthcare, functional foods and medical nutrition, and animal nutrition. As a leader in food technology, Cognis manufactures emulsifiers, stabilizers, binders, and numerous other specialty products for the food industry around the globe.

Sights on ’03 and Beyond

“Cognis will actively seek to develop new ingredients found in nature that are supported by credible science to fit with existing product lines and become the health-enhancing ingredients of the future,” Mr. Allen said. “Strengthening customer relationships through innovative approaches to products and services will also continue to be a key priority,” he added.

Targeting new opportunities for food products, Cognis announced its determination that XANGOLD® brand natural lutein esters products are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for addition to a variety of foods. Cognis has gone the extra step to notify the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the XANGOLD® GRAS status. XANGOLD® lutein esters are the first and only source of lutein to carry out this notification process. Cognis decided to submit this voluntary notification to demonstrate its commitment to providing safe ingredients to the food industry. The FDA’s response to the notification is expected shortly.

New Covitol® Natural-source Vitamin E Powder Provides Superior Performance and Removes EU Regulatory Hurdles

Cognis announced the launch of a new vitamin E ingredient for use in dietary supplements, fortified foods, and pharmaceuticals. COVITOL®1185 HPMC, a new grade of high potency natural-source vitamin E powder is a vitamin E succinate, coated with Hyproxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) using an innovative, patented technology. COVITOL®1185 HPMC is the result of efforts focused on finding a functional coating material that would pass the strict European food laws so Cognis customers would have a versatile vitamin E ingredient to use in their products worldwide. The COVITOL® range is the industry’s most complete line of natural-source vitamin E products.

Supplements of XANGOLD® 15% Natural Lutein Esters are being used in this ongoing study.
