Price hike at national starch
National Starch Food Innovation has announced that it is raising prices in North America on its food and pharmaceutical starches. The increase will range from eight to 10 per cent, depending on the level of processing required for the product.

Lipid Nutrition buys CLA One
Lipid Nutrition, a division of IOI-Loders Croklaan Group BV, has acquired PharmaNutrients' CLA One business. PharmaNutrients has elected to divest of its CLA One product line to focus on its business of proprietary nutritional formulations targeting inflammation, diabetes and cardiovascular health. As both companies operate warehouse and customer service facilities in the Chicago area, a smooth transition is expected, the companies say. Lipid Nutrition's manufacturing facility in the Netherlands will provide faster delivery to European clients and supply international needs.

Trade group joins coalition
The California Council of International Trade has joined the California Healthy Foods Coalition. Citing the world's growing acceptance of biotech crops and trade opportunities, CCIT has joined California's leading agriculture and business organizations, as well as elected leaders in voicing concerns with efforts to ban biotech crops in California, America's leading agricultural state.

Technology lowers trans fats
ADM's efforts to lower trans fats have garnered an Industry Week Technology and Innovation Award. ADM allied with Danish enzyme manufacturer Novozymes A/S to develop enzymatic interesterification. It uses enzymes to alter fatty-acid structures instead of employing product-producing chemicals or trans fat-creating partial hydrogenation. It also offers the most effective means to decrease trans-fat content without compromising oil functionality. In June, ADM and Novozymes also received the 2005 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award by the Environmental Protection Agency.

New Sales VP at Guayaki
Patrick Lee has joined yerba mate provider Guayaki Sustainable Rainforest Products as vice president of sales. Prior to joining Guayaki, Lee was president of nSpired Natural Foods. During two years at nSpired, Lee grew the company's sales from $30 million to $60 million.

Solbar in Eastern Europe
Solbar has established distribution channels in the Czech Republic, Slowakia and Poland for its range of speciality soy protein concentrates, isolates and textured products. Progast spol s.r.o. is Solbar's partner in the Czech Republic and Slowakia. Progast was established in 1991 as a private company oriented to supplying the meat and poultry industry, butchers, smoked meat makers and the food industry in general.

Alpha packaging purchase
Alpha Packaging has acquired Yorkbridge Packaging Northeast, a plastic bottle manufacturer in Pennsylvania. The purchase is Alpha's second acquisition in the northeastern United States in less than five years. Alpha manufactures polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles at three plants, and also makes bottles and preforms from polymerized lactic acid (PLA).

BioGaia signs distribution pact
Sweden-based BioGaia has signed an agreement with American Victus Inc, with whom BioGaia already has a cooperation regarding distribution of a Reuteri product with glutamine. The new agreement covers Reuteri tablets and Reuteri drops for the US hospital market.

NSF stamps ForsLean
Sabinsa Corp's branded and patented Coleus forskohlii extract ingredient, ForsLean, used to improve body composition, has been certified by NSF International. Fors-Lean underwent a toxicology review and purity testing to guarantee it is free of contaminants. Additionally, Sabinsa's facilities were previously found to adhere to NSF's good manufacturing practices standards.

Gadot line wins award
Frost & Sullivan's recent analysis of the US Mineral Fortification Market selected Gadot Biochemical Industries Ltd as the recipient of the 2005 Product Differentiation Innovation Award. The award recognizes the company's efforts to strengthen its market presence by developing a successful mineral line that includes Gadophit, Gadolin Calcium, Gadolin Magnesium and Tri calcium Citrate with Vitamin D3 (TCC VitD), which improve absorption of minerals in the body.

Vanilla bean business folds
A.M. Todd has discontinued its 70-year-old Zink & Triest vanilla bean trading business. The decision, its executives said, was based on the desire to focus solely on A.M. Todd's core businesses of flavours and botanical therapeutics.

Grape seed extracts certified
Four MegaNatural Grape Extract products have received authorization to use the NSF Certification Marks. The products are manufactured by Polyphenolics and include: MegaNatural GSKE Grape Pomace Extract, MegaNatural GSKE-40 Grape Pomace Extract, MegaNatural Gold Grape Seed Extract and MegaNatural Rubired Grape Juice Extract.
