National Starch and Chemical Company, a member of the ICI Group, announced that it has acquired the resistant starch business and the worldwide rights to the broad technology and intellectual property portfolio in high amylose resistant starch from Penford Australia Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Penford Corporation. The agreement covers the use of products for general applications as well as the exclusive global rights for products used in human nutrition.
Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co Ltd has entered into a collaborative research agreement with California-based Pharmagenesis Inc with regard to triptolide derivatives and immunosuppressants created by Pharmagenesis. The agreement gives Fujisawa an option to acquire the exclusive and worldwide development and marketing rights to Pharmagenesis' compounds for transplantation, autoimmune diseases and dermatology.
Perlmutter joins Nordic
Nordic Naturals Inc has hired board-cert-ified neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, to serve as medical advisor, media spokesperson and company representative.
A leading authority on preventive health care, complementary medicine and nutrition, Perlmutter is recognised for his pioneering advances in neurological diseases. He is the author of Life Guide: Your Guide to a Longer and Healthier Life and BrainRecovery.com—Powerful Therapy for Challenging Brain Disorders. He is the 2002 recipient of the Denham Harmon Award by the American College for Advancement in Medicine as well as the seventh Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award. Perlmutter serves as the medical director for the Perlmutter Health Center and the Perlmutter Hyperbaric Center in Florida.
Germans head into Asia
Germany-based AMINO GmbH has expanded its Asian distribution network, with Jakarta-based PT Nilaco Inti Natura for entering into agreements with Indonesian distribution and Seoul-based Jupiter International for Korean distribution.
New at Davisco
Susie Rockway, PhD, CNS, was named director of research and development at Davisco. She will manage the research lab for new technologies and products and clinical studies. Rockway's background in nutritional biochemistry adds a new dimension to Davisco, merging science and sales to effectively commercialise the health benefits of whey-based products.
Also, Davisco has appointed Michael Bednarek national sales manager with responsibility for specialty whey protein hydrolysates and whey protein fractions. He will also be involved in the commercialization of BioZate, Davisco's hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, which has been shown to significantly reduce hypertension. Bednarek was most recently sales development manager for Nutrinova.
Purac acquires Glucona
Dutch multinational PURAC, which is active in production and sales of food ingredients and confectionery products, has acquired the gluconic acid derivatives business of the AVEBE subsidiary, Glucona. The acquisition will enable PURAC to expand its product range, which is now focused on lactic acid and lactates.
Glanbia goes global
Glanbia Plc has established a new business unit to integrate the group's current international nutritional business under one management structure. The new unit is Glanbia Nutritionals, which looks to advance the group's position in the global nutritional ingredients market through development of existing operations, strategic alliances, joint ventures and acquisitions.
Jerry O'Dea, formerly vice president of Glanbia Ingredients USA, will head the new unit. The executive team will include: Andy Fleming, executive vice president, finance and strategy; Steve Singer, vice president, sales and customer service; Robert Beausire, director, business development; and Eric Bastian, director, research and development.
Haberman joins Loders
Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition has hired Jennifer Haberman as West Coast account manager, where she will be responsible for market development of Clarinol CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and Marinol Omega-3 fish oils. Prior to joining Loders Croklaan, Haberman worked for EM Industries and Shade Foods Inc. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and conducted graduate studies in food science and technology at the University of California.
