Congressional Champions, Industry Leaders to Keynote at NNFA Annual Trade Show and Convention

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., March 15, 2004 — NNFA’s 67th annual natural products convention and trade show—NNFA 2004—is anticipated to be one of the most memorable shows in recent NNFA history with its exciting new venue at the Sands Expo and Convention Center and the Venetian Resort Hotel on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Formerly known as NNFA MarketPlace, NNFA 2004 continues to preserve the show’s focus as the premier gathering place of dedicated natural products professionals interested in product offerings, information on health science, and legislative issues affecting industry. Adding to the exciting show schedule this year are NNFA 2004’s session speakers: keynote session speakers Reps. Chris Cannon and Frank Pallone, Jr.; opening keynote speaker Michael Murray, N.D.; and closing keynote speaker Fred Pescatore, M.D.

Keynote Speakers

Reps. Chris Cannon (R-UT) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), both previous recipients of NNFA’s Congressional Champion Award, will offer participants insight into legislation on Capitol Hill affecting the natural products industry.

Cannon, a long-time industry advocate, continues to remain a strong supporter of dietary supplement issues in Washington. Alongside other congressional advocates, he most recently helped pressure the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to release its long-awaited industry good manufacturing practices (GMP) rule, which was soon after published in early 2003. Representing districts encompassing one of the highest concentrations of industry manufacturers and suppliers, Cannon has vigorously defended and advocated industry rights on several fronts, including in his extensive meetings on judiciary and government reform committees.

Pallone, another key industry advocate, also urged FDA to publish a GMP regulation. And, following publication of the rule, he addressed the entire House about the importance of finalizing the regulation in a timely manner. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and an active member of the bicameral CAM [Complementary and Alternative Medicine] Caucus, Pallone has defended the consumer’s right to access alternative health therapies. Saturday’s keynote session takes place Saturday, July 17, at 10 a.m.

Opening Keynote Speaker

Dr. Michael Murray—considered one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine—is NNFA 2004’s opening keynote speaker. In addition, he co-authored several other books such as A Textbook of Natural Medicine and Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. As a health food industry consultant, Murray was instrumental in introducing natural products to North America, including glucosamine sulfate, St. John’s wort extract, ginkgo biloba extract, silymarin, enteric coated peppermint oil, and saw palmetto berry extract. Murray’s opening address takes place Friday, July 16, at 4:15 p.m.

Pescatore’s medical practice has become heir to the staff and patients of the famed Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine. He is the author of Thin For Good, and the best- selling children’s low-carb health book, Feed Your Kids Well. His latest book, The Allergy and Asthma Cure, looks at the low-carb, anti-inflammatory diet approach to address these conditions. Pescatore’s next book, The Hampton’s Diet, takes the low-carb lifestyle and Atkins philosophies to the next level by focusing on the use of foods of high nutritional quality. Don’t miss Pescatore’s discussion approaching health and wellness at the closing address Sunday, July 18, at 9 a.m.
