MINNEAPOLIS – There’s good news for food and beverage manufacturers who are looking for ways to develop heart healthy products. The CoroWise™ Naturally Sourced Cholesterol Reducer™ brand of plant sterols, when consumed in food products, may actually help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol level.
Produced by Cargill, CoroWise™ plant sterols are natural compounds derived from plants that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says may help reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. CoroWise™ plant sterols can be found in some of consumers’ favorite foods such as:
· Minute Maid Premium Heart Wise™ orange juice
· Yoplait Healthy Heart™ yogurt
· Rice Dream Heartwise™ rice drink
Plant sterols have been investigated in scores of human clinical studies with no adverse effects. The overall beneficial effect observed in these studies has been an average "bad" (LDL) cholesterol decline of 8 - 15%. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, foods that contain at least 0.4 grams per serving of plant sterols, consumed twice a day with meals (for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 grams), as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
“Now more than ever, people are craving great taste that is healthy and convenient. We are proud that by incorporating CoroWise™ plant sterols into their formulations, these leading manufacturers are making it easier than ever for people to find great tasting foods and beverages that help them protect their cardiovascular system,” said Ted Ziemann, president, Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT).
In February 2003, FDA indicated that a broader range of foods, beverages and supplements containing plant sterols may be able to use the heart health claim on their labels, provided the food meets certain requirements. Since then, Cargill H&FT has worked with a number of manufacturers to create innovative heart healthy products. Consumers can expect to see the CoroWise™ brand name on even more food, beverage and supplement labels in the future.
