An Associated Press article about designer eggs is getting wide distribution in various local papers.
According to the article, eggs produced by chickens fed different nutritional ingredients are enjoying increasing popularity as they are healthier or contain elevated levels of these ingredients. For instance, flax, kelp, canola oil, lutein, and vitamin E fed hens produce low-fat or enriched eggs.
Designer eggs make up approximately 5 percent of the $3 billion US egg market, and one of the largest producers, Eggland's Best Eggs, reported a 25 percent jump in designer egg sales last year. The present price premium for a designer egg is as much as 70 percent or more.
