100% Organic Italian Blood Orange Juice
available in response to demand from Caterers, Event Planners and Restaurants
LOS ANGELES, Nov 22, 2003 – Dream Foods International, LLC announced that Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice is now being distributed to restaurants and catering companies following its successful national launch in gourmet and specialty retail stores. The Sicilian-produced bright red, USDA-certified organic orange juice is now appearing at top restaurants in the country as both a beverage and as an ingredient. Since the retail launch in June of 2003, Santa Monica based Dream Foods International has moved into food service distribution in response to demand from well known chefs and caterers.
Hollywood Event Producer Heidi Asimus recommends that her celebrity clients include Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice as part of a signature cocktail or non-alcoholic beverage to distinguish the event menu. “We recommend everything from Italian Volcano™ Orange Bellinis to bright-red Italian Volcano™ Mimosas. Event photographers and fashion magazines have been drawn to these cocktails because they are so eye-catching. And, every client wants something they won’t see at other parties. The rarity of this juice allows us to provide that,” Asimus says.
Chefs are attracted to the juice because of its signature citrus flavor and brilliant color. “We also find bartenders who want to offer something new and healthy, rather than a sugary syrup base in their drinks,” says Marguerite Habis, National Sales Director for Dream Foods International. At Piero Selvaggio’s nationally recognized Valentino restaurant the juice is being used for sauces and desserts. World–renowned chef, Olivier Rousselle, of Michael’s in Santa Monica, uses the juice in blood orange margaritas and entree sauces. He has also had guests request that he include it in recipes for private parties. Food For Thought Catering in Chicago purchased 300 of the one-liter glass bottles to send to clients in Christmas gift baskets. “It is a way to set ourselves apart from competitors by showing them that we have access to rare and quality products that other companies don’t,” says Liz Sarnik of Food For Thought.
“Chefs have always appreciated Italian blood orange juice but it has always been difficult to find. Now that it is available year round, we are going to be seeing it on more menus around the country,” says Adriana Kahane, founder of Dream Foods International. “At some of the most well-known restaurants across the country, the juice is being used in everything from a Citrus Panna Cotta with Volcano Orange® Sauce to vinaigrettes and marinades – even in lobster risottos. Of course Italian chefs are more familiar with blood orange juice but our distribution is not limited to Italian restaurants by any means,” Kahane says.
Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice is produced in Sicily from three rare varieties of blood oranges grown and hand-harvested near the Mt. Etna volcano. The varieties of oranges used in creating this unique blend are Moro, Tarocco and Sanguinello. The Tarocco is the prized table orange that is almost impossible to find growing outside of Sicily. Moros provide the dark magenta color, while all three varieties are extremely high in antioxidants provided by the lava colored red pigment.
All of the blood oranges used to make the juice are grown in a small area of Eastern Sicily which benefits from volcanic soil and ocean breezes. This region is recognized by the European Union with the coveted “Indicazione Geografica Protetta” (IGP) similar to the DOC designation on wine labels. It is difficult to find blood orange farms even on the western side of Sicily near Palermo. In order to secure the freshest flavor possible, the blood oranges are squeezed immediately after harvest and the juice is pasteurized, giving the long shelf-life product a fresh-squeezed taste similar to the “Spremuta di Arance Rosse” found in most Italian bars. Unlike the fresh-squeezed “Spremuta,” Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice is available year-round.
The Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice contains many nutritional qualities above and beyond the more common blond orange juice. Bioagricert in Italy certifies the juice as organic according to USDA regulations. Not only does an 8.5 oz glass contain twice the daily RDA of Vitamin C, the red pigment in the oranges contains anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties. It is also produced under Kosher supervision.
Since 1999, Dream Foods International, LLC has been importing Volcano Oranges®, Italian blood oranges, which are distributed nationally during their short season from February through April. Consumers can register on the company’s website, at www.dreamfoods.com year round to be notified when the Volcano Oranges® are available or to be informed of retail locations which carry the Italian Volcano™ Orange Juice. The juice can also be purchased at www.mybrandsinc.com.
