Active Peptide Ingredient Speeds Muscle Recovery; Enhances Athletic Performance
On the heels of its successful sponsorship of the Dutch Olympic Team at this summer’s Athens Games, DSM Food Specialties (DFS) today announced that the company has reached an agreement with the International Skating Union to have its PeptoPro® active peptide ingredient become an official sponsor of the 2005 World Sprint Speed Skating Championships, which will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on 22 and 23 January 2005.
“PeptoPro is a proven ingredient that has already generated real results for world class athletes,” said PeptoPro Business Director Richard E. Calk, Jr. “We are proud to sponsor this year’s world championships because speed skating is a demanding sport that requires an athlete’s body to bounce back quickly after hours of intensive training. We look forward to introducing the skaters and their trainers and coaches to the benefits of incorporating the PeptoPro active peptide in their training regimens.”
PeptoPro is the active peptide ingredient contained in the PeptoProSports beverage used by the Dutch athletes in preparation for the Athens Games and is credited by many with improving the quality of their performance by speeding their muscle recovery. The most prominent proponent for PeptoPro is swimming superstar Inge de Bruijn, who at the age of 32 earned four medals at the Athens Games, including a Gold in the 50-meter freestyle. She credits the rejuvenation power of PeptoPro with helping her maintain a grueling training regimen, which included two-a-day workout sessions of nearly 15,000 meters (nearly 10 miles) of swimming, plus weight training.
“I would drink the PeptoProSports after morning practice and it would help my body recover for the afternoon training session. When you’re training eight hours a day, every day, it’s really a battle for your body to stay in top shape. PeptoProSports definitely helped me win the gold medal.”
De Bruijn liked the product so much that she signed a contract with PeptoPro in September to become an official spokesperson for the product. With eight Olympic medals, four of which gold, she is the most successful Dutch Olympic athlete ever.
Originally developed in partnership with the Netherlands Olympic Committee * Netherlands Sports Confederation (NOC*NSF), PeptoPro is produced using a new and patented process, which hydrolyzes casein to produce small, non-allergenic peptides that are immediately available for utilization in various bodily functions including the ability to aid in the increase of glucose uptake into the muscle, thereby increasing glycogen recovery in the muscle and accelerating the body’s recovery after exercise.
The development team selected casein derived from milk, which offers a better balance of essential and non-essential amino acids than soy, wheat, corn or whey protein, making it better for protecting and building muscle. The casein hydrolysate is then treated with an enzyme that cleaves the peptide chains within the protein into a unique di- and tri-peptide combination allowing immediate uptake in the gut while supplying essential amino acids intact. This process helps eliminate the bitter-tasting peptides and allergens.
The finished ingredient is an easy-to-handle powder that flows freely from the package, is highly water soluble, and remains stable in an acidic solution. When paired with a carbohydrate— sugar—the PeptoPro formula stimulates the body’s production of insulin, which enhances the re-synthesis of glycogen and helps speed muscle recovery.
According to clinical tests performed at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, athletes who consumed carbohydrate drinks containing PeptoPro showed a significant increase in their secretion of insulin and a reduction in their blood-sugar levels, speeding their muscle recovery time and improving athletic endurance performance.
Beginning in February, PeptoPro will be available to the public in MultiPower ReCharge Drink with PeptoPro developed by Hamburg-based Haleko GmbH.
