PETALUMA, Calif., Nov 10, 2003 -- Earthrise Nutritionals (Petaluma, California), the world leader in green foods, and Cyanotech Corporation (Kailua Kona, Hawaii) today jointly announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no questions about the companies' determination that Spirulina is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for addition to a variety of foods.
Spirulina is a dried form of the common blue-green microalgae (Cyanobacteria), Arthrospira platensis. Cultivated in the United States by Earthrise and Cyanotech, Spirulina is marketed as a food and a nutritional supplement and is noted for its content of fatty acids, vitamins, beta- carotene, zeaxanthin, phycocyanin and vegetable protein.
In March 2003, Earthrise and Cyanotech submitted a joint notice to the FDA reporting their determination, through scientific procedures, that the Spirulina cultivated by both companies is GRAS for addition to a variety of foods. Conclusion of the notification procedure (by the FDA's written response) provides assurance to food manufacturers and consumers that the FDA has had an opportunity to review the safety evaluation of Spirulina for its intended use in specialty food bars, powdered nutritional drink mixes, snacks such as popcorn, and as a condiment in salads and pasta.
Speaking on behalf of both companies were Amha Belay, Ph. D., Senior Vice President and Scientific Director for Earthrise and John E. Dore, Ph. D., Scientific Director for Cyanotech. "We are gratified that the FDA had no objection to our GRAS determination for Spirulina. This added safety assurance is a benefit we are pleased to offer our customers in the functional food and dietary supplement market and it paves the way for Spirulina's use in other food products."
Earthrise Nutritionals became the first American company to introduce Spirulina as a natural food in 1979, leading the green food revolution. Today, Earthrise markets its popular trademarked products in the USA and in 30 countries around the world out of its sales and marketing offices in Petaluma, California. Earthrise Spirulina is grown under controlled conditions following FDA good manufacturing practices (GMP), and under an ISO 9001 Quality Management System. This strict quality assurance system guarantees the safety, quality and consistency of the product. http://www.earthrise.com /
