Eco Lips, America’s premium organic lip balm company, is moving back into their downtown Cedar Rapids manufacturing facility after the great flood of Cedar Rapids in June 2008. The company was forced to quickly mobilize and set up a temporary location to manufacture product when the Cedar River flooded and downtown businesses were unable to access their offices for weeks.
According to Mark Patterson, CEO, “This move is important to us to not only rejoin the business community downtown but to continue the work that was done around our solar initiative in 2005.” Eco Lips had worked through IRENEW (Iowa Renewable Energy Association) to add solar power to its manufacturing facility, which ended up being one of Iowa’s largest solar power projects ever, with support from the State of Iowa, Alliant Energy and the Department of Natural Resources. “Our solar project put solar energy into the entire neighborhood and has drawn attention statewide as well as interest from tourists wishing to view the solar panels,” adds Mark. “We hope to expand our endeavor in the future with additional solar capacity in the works.”
The Eco Lips “brand” is a familiar brand of excellence offering a wide variety of innovative organic lip balms in different flavors, themes and styles. The company is also well known for its private label business that offer companies and organizations contract manufacturing including formulation and marketing, private label and co-label creating many opportunities for resale, gifting and promotion. “We have perfected the area of private label lip balm,” explains Mark, “so that companies can easily and inexpensively find solutions to their needs.”
The company lost little business during the flood “inconvenience” as employees rallied to meet the challenge. “Not all of our former space has been recovered but we are moving into the same building as before,” adds Mark. “We are happy to be going home.”
