Leading Omega-3 Supplier Lowers Acceptance Levels on Dioxins, Furans and PCBs
LYSAKER, Norway (March 09, 2006) - EPAX AS, a world leading supplier of Omega-3 EPA/DHA fatty acid concentrates, continues to increase the purity level in its products by lowering the acceptable level for dioxins, furans and dioxin-like PCBs in its Omega-3 concentrates. The new limits are a response to consumers' and the markets' concerns for environmental pollutant content in Omega-3.
EPAX has lowered its specification limits for the sum of dioxins, furans and dioxin-like PCBs from 7.5 pg/g to 5 pg/g in all their concentrates, TG and EE alike. Raising standards is a part of EPAX's Purity - Quality - Innovation commitment. In 2005 the company lowered the specification levels for organic pollutants and heavy metals for all oils.
There is an increasing amount of evidence for marine Omega-3 EPA/DHA and its positive effects in relation to a number of health concerns, such as cardiovascular health, joint health, mood and brain health. The demand for
Omega-3 oils is growing on a global basis and customers are demanding products with higher purity.
"We're proud that we can meet consumers' demands for the purest Omega-3 products available. EPAX has a strong focus on careful sourcing of raw materials. Thanks to our unique, two-step purification process, virtually all impurities and contaminants that can be found in fatty fish are removed," says Bjorn Refsum, CEO of EPAX AS. "This process is different from other available techniques since the oil entering the traditional concentration method of molecular distillation is already purified. The level of dioxin furans and dioxin-like PCBs in EPAX concentrates are now less that 5 pg/g, or 50 percent lower, than the proposed new EU regulation with a maximum limit of 10 pg/g, that is supposed to be introduced later this year."
"Offering maximum purity reflects our commitment to our customers and the marketplace," says Anders-Morten Blindheim, Director of Marketing and Sales in EPAX. "This is in line with our strategy to remain ahead of regulatory measures and to constantly improve by setting new industry standards. This enables us to realize our most important commitment - consumer safety and consumer trust."
EPAX AS is headquartered in Lysaker, Norway and has a GMP approved production facility in Alesund, Norway, which is approved for API production by the Norwegian Medicines Agency.
