Study Claim: NutraFlora short-chain fructooligosaccharides, a fermentable fibre prebiotic, reduces diarrhoea and improves markers of intestinal function in animals.

Published: Nancy J, et al. Fermentable fibre reduces recovery time and improves intestinal function in piglets following salmonella typhimurium infection. J Nutri 2003;133:1845-52.

Abstract: Two-day-old piglets were randomly assigned to receive a control formula, or formula containing methylcellulose (MCEL), soy polycaccharides (SPS) or fructooligosaccharides (FOS) for 14 days. On day seven, piglets were further randomised to receive an oral gavage of Salmonella typhimurium or serve as noninfected controls. The salmonella infection produced diarrhoea in controls and MCEL groups, but not in the SPS or FOS groups. Postinfection physical activity was lower in the controls than in all other groups. Ileal lactase activity was reduced following infection in the control group only. Ileal mucosal barrier function, measured as resistance, was impaired by infection in the control and SPS groups, but was unaltered in the jejunum and colon. Total ion transport and basal short-circuit current were higher in jejunum than in ileum and colon, irrespective of diet or infection. SPS and FOS increased ileal glutamine transport relative to piglets fed MCEL, irrespective of infection.

Potential Applications: Because fermentable fibre enhances intestinal function and reduces the severity of S. typhimurium infection-associated symptoms, it may be a cost-effective way to reduce the severity of pathogenic infection-associated symptoms in infants. NutraFlora can be incorporated into almost any food product, from yoghurts to cereal bars to beverages.

Study Claim: BioZate 1, a hydrolysed whey protein isolate, lowers blood pressure.

Published: Pins JJ, Keenan JM. The antihypertensive effects of a hydrolyzed whey protein isolate supplement (BioZate 1). Cardiovasc Drugs Ther 2002;16(Suppl 1):68.

Abstract: Thirty unmedicated, non-smoking, borderline hypertensive men and women were randomised to the hydrolysed whey protein isolate group or an unhydrolysed whey protein isolate control. After six weeks of 20g/day, patients experienced a significant drop in systolic blood pressure (11mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (7mmHg). Further research is needed to determine the mechanism of action.

Potential Applications: BioZate 1 can provide a viable alternative to medication for reducing hypertension.

Study Claim: Men diagnosed with recurring prostate cancer in which conventional therapies have failed may benefit from modified citrus pectin, a nutrient derived from citrus fruits.

Published: Guess BW, et al. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) increases the prostate-specific antigen doubling time in men with prostate cancer: a phase II pilot study. Prostate Cancer Postatic Dis 2003; 6:301-4.

Abstract: The trial investigated the tolerability and effect of modified citrus pectin (Pecta-Sol) in 13 men with prostate cancer and biochemical prostate-specific antigen failure after radical prostatectomy, radiation or cryosurgery. A total of 13 men were evaluated for tolerability and 10 for efficacy. Each participant received Pecta-Sol in 800mg capsules. The total daily dosage was 18 capsules per day (14.4g) taken in three divided doses with eight ounces of water or juice. Changes in the prostate-specific antigen doubling time (PSADT) of the 10 men were the primary end point in the study. The PSADT increased in seven of the 10 men after taking Pecta-Sol for 12 months compared to before taking the supplement. This study suggests that MCP may lengthen the PSADT in men with recurrent prostate cancer.

Potential Applications: Pecta-Sol may have utility in men who are suffering from recurring prostate cancer, as well as a potentially useful preventive agent against the risk of prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
